History of the Department
Realizing the importance of the Physical fitness and education for Society through the school and college going youth the Government of Karnataka started the College of Physical Education in 1959(Residential in nature). In the year 1968, the Government College of Physical Education evolved to get affiliated to the Bangalore University. Having proved its worth, Diploma course was upgraded to Bachelor degree of Physical Education (B.P.Ed) programme in 1971. In 1972, Postgraduate Degree in Physical Education (M.P.Ed) was started. The Government College of Physical Education was transferred to Bangalore University in the year 1976. Since then the College is an Integral part of Bangalore University. Ph.D Programme was started to take up quality research and publication activities in the field of Physical Fitness and Education domains, with all its spectrum of contributions, has upheld the values in these services avenues of an Ideal University Academics, Publications and Research in the field of Physical Education

B. Nature of Courses -
a) M.P. Ed. -2 Years (4 Semesters)

a) Minimum Requirement for Admission Pass in Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P. Ed) Degree course of Bangalore University or any other University considered as equivalent thereto, securing at least 50% Marks.
b) The age of candidates seeking admission to the M.P. Ed Degree course should be below 28 years as on 1st July of the year of admission, extendable up-to 30 years to outstanding sportspersons. Outstanding sportsperson means a candidate who has participated in recognized inter-University/interstate/international sports or games competitions. In case of in-service candidates (trained Physical Education Teachers and Coaches) age may be relaxed up to 35 years, subject to condition that they are medically fit. All candidates shall produce a medical fitness certificate issued by a Medical Officer of not less than the rank of District Surgeon.
c) The candidate should be appointed on the regular pay scale, immediately after completion probationary period minimum of 2 years of service as a Physical Education Teacher for joining as a in-service candidate (on Deputation). The candidate should be from Government/Aided Institutions (Schools and Colleges). A Certificate to this effect shall be signed by the concerned authority.
2) B. P. Ed.:
Any graduate of Bangalore University or of any other University recognized by the Bangalore University as equivalent there to who is physically fit and satisfies any of the following conditions will be eligible for admission to B. P. Ed. Degree Course.
(a) Graduate in Physical Education i.e., B.P.E of three year duration with 45% marks. OR Graduate with at-least 40% marks, having represented State/University: Sports/ Games/Athletics/as per the list of sports of A.I.U. OR Graduate with at-least 40% marks who has secured 1st, 2nd or 3rd position in University Inter-Collegiate sports/games tournaments or possessing NCC ‘C’ Certificate or passed basic course in adventure sports OR Graduate with at-least 45% having marks participated in Inter collegiate/Inter-District/Divisional Level Sports/Games tournament OR Graduate with at-least 45% marks and one year training programme in sports science, sports management sports coaching, Yoga, Olympic Education, sports Journalism etc. Physical fitness of the candidates is assessed by administering National Physical Fitness Program Tests of India as indicated in Regulation 6.
(b) Candidates seeking admission to B. P. Ed Degree course should be below 26 years of age, 28 years age for SC/ST and Cat-I, as on 1St July of the year of admission. The age is relaxable up-to 30 years for outstanding sports persons. Outstanding sports person means a candidate who has participated in recognized Inter-University/Inter-State/Inter-National sports or games competitions. However in case of in-service candidates trained Physical Education Teachers and coaches, the age is relaxed up-to 35 years, subject to condition that, they are medically fit. All candidates shall produce a medical fitness certificate issued by a medical officer of not less than the rank of district surgeon along with the application.
(c) There shall be reservation seats for SC/ST/Cat-I as per the rules of the Karnataka State Government.
