History of the Department
The Department of Biochemistry was established as an independent department after bifurcation of the Department of Chemistry in August, 2008. Prior to its independent establishment, the Biochemistry division under Department of Chemistry was independently running M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs. The Biochemistry M.Sc. Program in Bangalore University was initiated by renowned Biochemist and a teacher of yore, Prof. M.S. Shadakshara Swamy in 1969. Ever since, the Biochemistry division has attained national and international recognition due to efforts of dedicated teachers like Prof. P.S. Veerabhadrappa, Prof. L. Govardhan, Dr. P.S. Jyothi, and Prof. N.H. Manjunath. In the footsteps of the predecessors, the department is striving hard to create a niche for itself in national and international arena both in teaching and research.
The main emphasis of the Department of Biochemistry is post graduate teaching complemented by research. The Department offers M.Sc., and Ph.D., Degree in Biochemistry. Several of our students have successfully cleared NET (UGC-CSIR) and GATE examinations. The department has the distinction of providing highly talented scientists and teachers who have carved a niche for themselves nationally and internationally. On an average, 20% of successful Post Graduates from this department enroll for Research in National and International Laboratories. About 20% of them are employed in R&D Laboratories & Pharma Industries and about 20% of them take up teaching profession. The Department has produced many luminaries who have occupied coveted positions in industry and academia at national and international level. Apart from primary focus on teaching, faculty members are actively engaged in research activities, and have secured financial assistance from various agencies, such as DST, DBT, UGC and private firms. The Department is recognized by Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India as a FIST Department in 2013-14.
