History of the Department
The Department of Molecular Biology had its genesis on 13th October, 2006 at Plant Biotechnology Unit, Annexe-Department of Botany, which was established by Dr.M.C.Gayatri, Professor of Botany with the financial support from Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. This Molecular Biology course was inaugurated by His Excellency T.N.Chaturvedi, Governor of Karnataka on 13th October 2006. The major focus of Molecular Biology is to create Human Resource with most sophistication in technological advancement to reach highest excellence and to meet the challenges at the global level to conduct frontline research. The convergence between the conventional and molecular approach is instrumental in creating new areas of inter-disciplinary nature such as Proteomics, Genomics, Genetic Engineering, Transgenics and Stem Cell Research. In the present day world scenario, dramatic advancement in Biology has resulted in new technological innovations which are the key to the economic development of our country. A number of multinationals have established Biotechnological, pharmaceuticals and chemical industries in Bangalore and they require highly specialized human resource in the field of Molecular Biology, hence there is a great need of Molecular Biology training course for younger generation who aspire for getting themselves professionally sound and challenging in Molecular Biology and also basic Science. Keeping this in view, the Bangalore University, for the first time in our state, started a two years Post Graduate program in Molecular Biology in the year 2006-2007. During the past four years Department has successfully trained two batches of students and all the students who have passed out from the Department have got the job in different Industries and Institutes. Plant Biotechnology Unit is well recognized for its original research in Cytogenetics, Tissue Culture, Transgenic Plants, Somaclonal Variation, Disease Tolerant Clones through cell selection technique and also Synogy for long term conservation of rare, endangered, endemic and high value target species of commercially important crops.

E. Eligibility : Graduates who have secured 50% marks in aggregate of all subjects with compulsory Chemistry! Bio - Chemistry and Botany/ Zoology/ Bio-Chemistry / Bio-Technology/Micro Biology / Applied Genetics /Applied Botany/Applied Zoology! Sericulture and other Bio-Science subjects as one of the optional Subjects in the qualifying University examinations are eligible.
