History of the Centre
Centre for Kannada Studies was established in 1918 at Central College as part of Mysore University. Luminaries of Kannada literature like G.P. Rajaratnam taught in the department. When Bangalore University was established in 1964, Prof. R.S. Mugali became Head of the Department. He was the recipient of Central Sahithya Academi Award and the first historian of Kannada literature. Department moved to Jnanabharathi Campus in 1973. Dr. G.S. Shivarudrappa was HOD. The Department was named Center for Kannada Studies. Centre for Kannada Studies is nurtured by stalwarts of Kannada literature and scholars. Who have contributed in the areas like poetics, criticism, linguistics, folkore and cultural studies. G.S.Shivarudrappa has been honoured by Government of Karnataka as National poet. G.S.S, Kambar, Dr.Nagaraj, Chidanada Murthy have got Central Sahithya Academy awards. Kambar He has been honoured by kabeer samman and Padmashri. He was served as M.L.C. Baraguru Ramachandrappa Reputed film maker and writer who lead Bandaya Movement has been awarded for his films. Siddalingaiah our faculty has become K.B.A. President. He was in the forefront of Dalith movement. He was M.L.C. fortwoterms and he was served as K.D.A. President. At present the Department is a team of 10 teachers comprising of two professors, Four readers and Four lecturers.
1. To keep pace with times and shape curriculum from time to time
2. To take lead in launching new modes of thoughts as part of new literary, social and cultural movements.
3. To equip the students with new conceptual and theoretical approaches.
4. To equip the students for establishing a meaningful link between literature and society.

E. Eligibility :
M.A. in Kannada & M.A. in Comparative literature studies (Taulanika Kannada): Graduates who have secured 40% in the aggregate of all subjects and 50% marks in the cognate subject in the qualifying University examinations are eligible to apply. Candidates with B.A./B.Sc./B.Com. Degrees are eligible to apply provided they have scored 55% in the Language concerned in the degree course with Kannada Rathna or Pandit.
PG Diploma in Epigraphy: Candidates who have passed Post Graduate Degree in Kannada, History, Ancient History, Archeology and Indology are eligible for admission. General Merit candidates must have secured 55% in aggregate and candidates belonging to SC/ST/Category -l must have secured 50% in aggregate in respective Post Graduate Courses.
PG Diploma in Janapada: Candidates who have passed Post Graduate Degree in Kannada, History, Sociology, Humanities, Psychology are eligible for admission. General Merit candidates must have secured 55% in aggregate and candidates belonging to SC/ST/Category-i must have secured 50% in aggregate in respective Post Graduate Courses.
PG Diploma in Bhasha Vignana: (Linguistics): Candidates who have passed Post Graduate Degree in Kannada Literature or Literature in other languages are eligible for admission. General Merit candidates must have secured 55% in aggregate & candidates belonging to SC/ST/Category-1 must have secured 50% in aggregate in respective Post Graduate Courses.
