History of the Department

Canara Bank School of Management Studies (CBSMS), Bangalore's leading contemporary School of Management, started in 1998. It aims at creating managers out of its down to earth students to adapt themselves to the environment of the working organization and carry forward for both personal and organizational growth with missionary dedication. Being the Post-Graduate Department of Management, CBSMS designs, monitors and regulates the MBA program of Bangalore University. Leading entrepreneurs, professional advisors, well qualified Faculty and visiting Professors are behind the School's success for excellence in the last one and half decade. An apex department for the 58 MBA Colleges affiliated to Bangalore University; the School is also a novel experiment in industry and academic collaboration. Canara Bank, a leading public sector bank of India has contributed a huge corpus for the establishment of CBSMS. This is one its kind in the country.

 Started in 1998, the Canara Bank School of Management Studies has become the hub of management education in Bangalore University. In fact, it is a novel experiment in Industry academic; the University Grants Commission (UGC) has also extended a helping hand.

COURSES OFFERED:

  1. MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (FULL TIME)

1.1 ELIGIBILITY

  • A graduate degree under 10+2+3 or 10+2+4 pattern under any discipline securing at least 50% marks in aggregate including languages from a recognized university in India or abroad.
  • Honours degree under 10+2+4 pattern from a recognized university under UGC Act having atleast 50% marks in aggregate including languages.
  • Candidates who have passed bachelor / master degree through correspondence / Open University system from this university or from any other university recognized by law are exempted from 10+2 pattern. The duration of the degrees must be three and two years respectively.
  • Candidates who pass bachelor/master degree in any university system in single sitting pattern are not eligible.
  • In case of SC/ST/Cat I candidates, there will be a relaxation of 5% in the aggregate of marks obtained.  
  • All admissions to CBSMS and affiliated colleges will be made through an Entrance Test conducted by appropriate body as approved by Govt. of Karnataka and State Level counseling based on Rank Merit and the reservation rules based on the seat matrix as announced by Karnataka Examination Authority, Govt. of Karnataka.

1.2 INTAKE OF THE PROGRAMME

  • The number of seats shall be limited a maximum to 60 per section. (As per AICTE norms)
  • Reservation for schedule caste and schedule tribes and other backward communities and physically challenged will be as per the Government of Karnataka Orders from time to time.
  • Admissions to Supernumerary seats in CBSMS are as per the University Norms from time to time.

1.3 DURATION OF THE COURSE

The duration of the MBA Program shall extend over 4 semesters (Two Academic Years) of 16 Weeks or more each with a minimum of 90 actual working days of instruction in each semester and two to three weeks of examination.

2. MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (PART TIME)

2.1 ELIGIBILITY

  • A graduate degree under 10+2+3 or 10+2+4 pattern under any discipline securing at least 50% marks in aggregate including languages from a recognized university.
  • Honors degree under 10+2+4 pattern from a recognized university under UGC Act having at least 50% marks in aggregate including languages.
  • Candidates who have passed bachelor / master degree through correspondence / Open University system from this university or from any other university recognized by law are exempted from 10+2 pattern. The duration of the degrees must be 3 years 2 years respectively.
  • Candidates who pass bachelor/master degree in any university system in single sitting pattern are not eligible.
  • A minimum of two years after graduation full-time supervisory experience in any organization with a turnover of Minimum Three Crores and employing not less than 50 employees.
  • In the case of teaching/non-teaching staff working in the university or affiliated colleges, a two/five years of full-time teaching/administrative experience is essential.
  • The Admission to the program will be effected through admission test conducted by Karnataka Examination Authority, Govt. of Karnataka.

INTAKE OF THE PROGRAMME

The number of seats shall be limited a maximum of 60 in a class.

Reservation of Seats for admission will be as per the Government & University Orders from time to time.

DURATION OF THE COURSE

The duration of the MBA Program shall extend over 4 semesters (Two Academic Years) of 16 Weeks or more each with a minimum of 90 actual working days of instruction in each semester and two to three weeks of examination.

3. DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN MANAGEMENT

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO Ph.D. COURSE (Extract of Bangalore University PhD Ordinance)

4.1  Any candidate who has obtained a Post-Graduate Degree from a recognized University securing not less than 55% mark shall be eligible to apply for the PhD Degree Program.

4.2  In the case of SC/ST/Cat-I/Differently abled candidates, and those who are appointed on regular basis prior to March 31, 1992 as teachers, librarians and physical education personnel in colleges and University Departments, the minimum marks shall be 50% provided the employees are continuing in service at the time of submission of application for registration.

4.3  If the results of Master’s Degree are declared in the form of grades/credits/ cumulative points in their marks cards/ transcripts, such grades/points shall be converted into percentage to assess the minimum eligibility criteria as specified above in Regulations 4.1 and 4.2.

8.1  All eligible applicants except those mentioned under 8.2 shall appear for the Entrance Test.

8.2  The candidates who have cleared the UGC/UGC-CSIR JRF Test/ NET/ SLET/ SET/ GATE/ Recognized young researchers by DST, UGC, CSIR, AICTE, etc./ obtained M.Phil. degree through regular course work and not through distance education mode/ Project Fellows/ Project Assistants working in sponsored major research projects/ FIP/QIP/ Foreign candidates shall be eligible for exemption from the Entrance Test.

8.3  The Entrance Test.

8.3.1  Maximum marks for Entrance Test: 100.

8.3.2  Nature of questions: Multiple choice questions of one mark each.

8.3.3  Syllabus for the Entrance Test: Research Methodology and / or cognate/ core subjects of the PG courses.

8.3.4  Duration of Entrance Test: 120 minutes.

9.  Preparation of Merit List of Successful Candidates

9.1  After the Entrance Test, Consolidated Merit List of all the candidates shall be prepared on the basis of the marks obtained in the entrance test and marks obtained in the qualifying examination in the ratio of 50:50. However, the candidate has to secure an overall minimum of 50% marks (45% for SC/ST/Cat I, a further remission of 5% of marks may be considered, if the seats still remain vacant in those categories) to be eligible for provisional registration.

9.2  The Merit List of the candidates who have cleared the UGC/UGC-CSIR JRF Test/ NET/ SLET/ SET/ GATE/ Recognized young researchers by DST, UGC, CSIR, AICTE, etc./ obtained M.Phil. degree through regular course work and not through distance education mode/ teachers on FIP/QIP/ Project Fellows/ Project Assistants working in sponsored major research projects shall be prepared in that order, based on the percentage of marks secured by them at their qualifying examinations.

9.3  Names that appear in the Consolidated Merit Lists shall be notified and considered for the present vacancies only. The vacancies shall be allotted equally to the Entrance and non-Entrance categories. However the vacant seats are mutually transferable.

11.  Course Work:

11.1  After Provisional Registration, all the registered candidates shall take up the course work in the respective P.G Department/ College/ Institution. The Full time and the part-time candidates have to complete the course work in a semester on full time basis. In exceptional cases the part time research candidates may be allowed to complete the course work in two semesters. During full time course work, the candidates shall take papers I, II, III and work on the Research Proposal under the supervision of the Guide in a semester. In part time course work, the candidates shall take papers I, II & III in the first semester and in the second semester work on the Research Proposal.
